Pupil Premium
The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in April 2011, and is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support children from low-income families, who are entitled to Free School Meals, are looked after by the local authority or are from families with parents in the Armed Forces.
It is for individual schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, as each school is best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
At Mary Elton, our Pupil Premium money is spent by contributing towards various activities and initiatives within the school, specifically:- our Learning Mentor, who keeps in contact with the children on a daily basis, to monitor their well being;
- our Parent Support Partners, who liaise with our families;
- contributions to school trips, school camp and educational visits;
- additional educational support through small groups or on an individual basis.
You can find more information on Pupil Premium from the Government website, using the following link:
Do you qualify for free school meals?
We believe that this money can make a big difference to your child’s education.
This year the amount allocated to each school per eligible pupil is now:
- £1455 for FSM or Ever 6 FSM pupils.
- £2530 for Looked After Children.
- £320 for Children of Service Personnel.
If your financial or family circumstances change you may be entitled to Free School Meals. You can complete a short online form to find out if you are eligible, then as well as getting a daily meal, your child will also benefit in the ways outlined above.
With this money we can provide extra resources for your child.
You can register your child for free school meals if you get any of these benefits:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more the £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on, paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit with annual take home pay/met earnings below £7,400 (which equals £616.67 per month) benefits not included.
Registration is confidential, quick and easy and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming.
Please click here to check if your child can get free school meals in England and find out how to apply on your local authority’s website. Please click here for details on how to apply through North Somerset Council's website.
If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that’s great – they will get the free meal, extra benefits and the school gets £1455 extra to support their learning. If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as you qualify and are registered, the school still gets £1455 extra to support their learning.
